Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality
Macaws are great companion birds. They are smart and affectionate. These birds are ideally suited to families with a range of members. They can get bored easily and will seek out other ways to entertain themselves when their owners do not interact with them enough. If they are not socialized properly macaws may become aggressive and may even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly established so that the macaw does not feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that love to play, interact, and climb. They require 2 to 3 hours per day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games while listening to music, and learning new tricks. They enjoy visiting playgrounds and parks as well as local restaurants and bars. They are not only a great pet but is also a great companion for children.
Despite their adoring appearance, these birds are very loud and can be a distraction to those living close by. They are capable of loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be a nuisance in condominiums and apartments, or in close proximity to children who may be frightened by their roar.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. This is why DNA testing is the only method of determining sex. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. It is a lengthy process and the pet's owner must be patient and realize that this is a tough task. Positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and help to correct any behavior issues.
Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to stop performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to return to the sea.
Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They sabotage her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and harming her immune system. They also keep her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her a relative and plan that would eventually take her to open water. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, where she could live for the duration of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean and not an actual concrete tank.
If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who are close to their families until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. People from all over the country have demanded Lolita's release from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. They include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet
As with any animal species in captivity, a captive gold and blue macaw's well-being is dependent on a healthy diet. These beautiful birds require top-quality food, as well as plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. A well-fed macaw in captivity can live for up to 60 years. In addition, this majestic bird needs plenty of room to fly and exercise.

Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on the condition of Lolita and her health however there are many questions. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she is eating more than 115 pounds of salmon capelin, herring and squid daily.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they provide their killer whales, specifically Lolita. The orca, who was 57 years old, was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is endangered in the wild, she is in an aquarium that many claim is too small for her.
Lolita's Health
Lolita is beautiful, however her health is declining. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare groups that would like to see her returned to the wild. Lolita is a resident of the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was a tourist attraction for decades. She has been battling chronic illnesses and a crippling disease that has left her in a fragile state.
The Dolphin Company, which now owns the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any details regarding the condition of Lolita. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has published monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is ageing rapidly and her health has declined.
It is unclear what specific health issues are affecting the orca, since her captor isn't required to divulge the information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies collected from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays a role in the deaths of captive orcas.
Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita, many people believe that she could be closer than ever to a wild life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to transfer the whale from her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.
After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea and she will be able to go swimming in the deep sea and perhaps be being reunited with her mother orca. Unfortunately, these plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal issue.
